NATO's Role in the Cold War

The Cold War was a period of intense geopolitical competition and ideological conflict between the United States and its western allies. NATO played a critical role in balancing Soviet expansion and aggression, maintaining peace and stability in Europe during this time. The organisation initially consisted of 12 member states, but it has since grown to include 30 member countries, actually 31 including Finland. One of the key moments in NATO's expansion was the inclusion of new members from Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s and early 2000s.
