Max heart rate is a little bit variable. It's also very hard to actually reach in training. Lactate threshold, meanwhile, is something that stabilizes across sessions and is highly trainable. So we can estimate it within a beat or two. Once you're close enough to approximate your LTHR, the big way to think about zone one and zone two is 80% or less of that number is your zone one.
