liberty's mother is based off of a real life person, susan smith mc kinney stewart. She was the first black female doctor in new york state and grew up in weeksville,. A free black community founded in central brooklyn in 18 38 - 11 years after the end of slavery in New York State. The history of the whole place is really sort of stunning. And an am from 18 38 into twentieth century, it's just been a sort of like a hot bed of interesting intersections of american history.
