Conquering the Wealth Through Conquest Is Harder Than Conquest
The idea was that territorial gains could be cumulative, that you'd grow stronger. But the world is becoming at least the Western or wealthier parts of the world are becoming more like that so it's harder to just conquer wealth and take it over. Nationalism allows people to organize along national lines and resist conquest. And even transportation technology could help people can just leave instead of staying there to be conquered.
