The Rise of Doctrinal Religions in the United States
There are several papers now i think which suggests that there's always an upsurge in in religion so religious behavior generally following any kind of environmental shocks. The axial age religions all seem to appear when the size of the community the political unit as you know the policy is about a million people and you've got real coordination. They're adding another layer of discipline from a different source as it were now top down as opposed to bottom up.
