Alex is the embodiment of money privilege because his behavior is very, very close to someone who gets locked in a loony bin or whatever. Joe probably in the same way wants an explanation for why his friend would treat him that way. And I think he hopes for an answer other than, Oh, he's just a crazy person and he has money.
