A spotlight is a light which throws or projects a narrow intense beam of light directly onto a place or a person especially someone who's performing on stage or maybe escaping from prison you could have a spotlight looking for you as you're running away after climbing the prison wall. It's often used metaphorically here's an example the paparazzi never leave that film star alone she's always in the spotlight so they're not literally shining a light in her face necessarily it just means that they always want to make her the center of attention.
