The German President, Gladstone, Was a Party Poltergeist
Weber thought that political leadership in a modern state meant speaking for the nation as a whole. He worried that germany, under the wimar constitution, would be a parliament in which there would be multiple competing sights of authority. And so he was a great supporter of a feature of that constitution, which was the power of the president to assume an almost dictatorial power at times of crisis. But Weber had no idea what was coming whenHitler came along and destroyed Germany.
