The US's Decision Not to Address the Liberian Conflict

In June 1990, U.S. Deputy Secretary Larry Eagleburger received word from the National Security Council that the President had decided the United States would not take charge of the Liberian problem. By this point, rebels had entered the Firestone Rubber Plantation near Roberts Field and Monrovia itself was threatened. Due to the potential threat to lives, all Americans were strongly advised to depart Liberia immediately. But I remember meetings where the SCO Corps of Deputy Robert Gates, who had come from the CIA, said it's meaningless. He doesn't govern us anymore. We treat Liberia just like any other country, and we have no real interest there.
