In Texas, these signs are used to display year-to-day counts of road fatalities. When you turn these signs on, there's an immediate increase in the number of crashes. The effect is strongest right after the sign and then by the time you get 7 kilometers after the sign, the effect goes away. This is a policy that inspired similar policies across the country in different states without much evidence about its effectiveness.
