Anthropological research shows we're hardwired to treat gift giving and receiving as a mutual obligation. This is shown in early human societies dating back 5000 years ago. So no wonder there's all this mental and emotional energy that we can experience around lying gifts, giving and receiving. It's part of our conditioning.
