The principle of persuasion needs to be motivated by metaphysical and moral foundations. Once you don't have a Christian morality or a Christian metaphysics backing it up, you'll end up substituting that with something else. So I think one of the reasons why persuasion is a dying artist because of the Christian foundations that are eroding around us today.
