The Navy word for trading things to get parts outside of the normal acquisition process is kumshaw. These guys weren't doing kumshaw so much as they were just stealing. It's on Guadalcanal stealing M1 Garon rifles to me when they were still firing those with two in 1917 Springfield's bolt action rifles. And his name, pappy, Beuington came from the press, not himself. He absolutely loved the fact that they called him pappy.
