There are a lot of stereotypes about the victorians, and what they would think of us. The main literary sort of tone of the era is the tone of flattery. They're always flattering each other, writing these long letters to each other. And there's this one writer who was very politically influential: sidonius. Are you standing at the great villa? What do your friends care about it? You don't have to stand in front of an audience for people to notice that you've got some kind of power over them.
