The Artemision and the Megabisis

The third temple of Artemis at Ephesus took more than a century to complete. In 356 BC, the temple was destroyed in an act of arson by a madman named Aristratis. At the heart of the temple was the famous cult image, mysteriously un-hellenic in appearance. Another foreign goddess who the Greeks sometimes identified with Artemis was Bendis.
