It might be like trying to understand why certain birds of the color they are. There's nothing in the DNA that can tell you that information. Maybe there was a huge wildfire, a bushfire that turned everything black for a while there. And so in order to avoid predators, this adaptation arose. This mutation was caused by the random events that cause evolutionary mutations.
