Edison felt slighted when a minor scientist paid tribute to Alexander graham bell for inventing the telephone, without mentioning him. So he invents a new chalk receiver that makes the telephone much more functional and capable of receiving messages from far greater distances. And does it just as a side show, and then he's right back to the light bulb. To me, this is peke edison at his powers, where he's inventing stuff just a stunt on people, just to show them that he can.
