In 2000, eBay built its own monitoring system called central application logging or CAL. The goal was to like debug stuff and figure out where it might have happened in the database. And so every time we were about to make a database call, we would say, hey, I'm about to make this data. It would happen, and then we would log whether it was successful or not successful,. We could see how long it took, et cetera.
