Stevie Smith's Novel on Yellow Paper
Stevie Smith's first book is called Novel on Yellow Paper, or Subtitled Work It Out For Yourself. She has been writing poem seriously for about ten years from around 1924. In 1934 she sends them to a publisher, this mass of poems. The reader says this is extraordinarily mixed stuff. We're not going to publish it. So she takes them to another publisher. They're quite interested, but the publisher says to her, Go away and write a novel. And she thinks this is a challenge that he doesn't think she's going to take up. But in the novel she quotes several of the poems, and says to the reader, You get first look in.
