Evolution is not in the business of inventing complex structures out of whole cloth. The human mind doesn't have completely new structures emerging in it that have some novel purpose to make us uniquely human. We're talking about evolutionarily older structures mammalian structures and below which get repurposed in ways which can be highly counterintuitive but we have a lot in common with our primate cousins as a matter of neuroanatomy. It's extraordinarily unlikely that there is a unified self in there in a position to seize the reigns of consciousness, he says.
