During the rescue of more than 500 passengers and crew, there was not a single fatality or any serious injuries. The Dutch inspector of shipping concluded that Captain Wabika was not to blame for the disaster. In 1992, the International Maritime Organization enacted new regulations requiring all passenger ships to be equipped with sprinkler systems. It's believed that a defective seal in a fuel line caused the leak that sparked the fire.
