In the early days of the web, you would go to like Delta Airlines or something like that on your mobile device and it would kick you over to delta dot usable debt. Now we have things like WebSockets and stuff like that that can really enable real time communication. But having that as a fallback will ensure that your service will run no matter what. Douglas Crockford actually called it the most hostile place for software engineering: "The web is very hostile"
