Pornographic literature existed in the Hellenistic period, but seems to have been limited to sexual type manuals that enumerated the physicians of heterosexual intercourse. To the ancient Greeks, masturbation was a normal and healthy substitute for other sexual pleasures,. Airstophanes described Spartans as a wankers in his comedy, Lysistrata. The majority of prostitutes were women, of all ages, though young men were also known. Both genders were for a predominantly male clientele, though as we will see there were some exceptions.
