Gene Transfer Among Bacteria

Bacteria don't just have to rely on what's called vertical transfer. Horizontal transfer across unrelated organisms and even unrelated species is somezerg nonsense. This typically, though, only happens between closely related species of bacteria. For those other groups, it still happens, but typically it needs a facilitator. Something has to carry some genes from one to the other.
