In 1939, a pact of non-aggression between the Nazis and the Soviets partitioned Poland. Jews were not allowed to take trains without special permission or work in factories owned by Christians. In response to Nazi oppression, Jewish resistance movements formed across Poland. Bella Hazan was involved in these movements. She had been trained in combat by Zionist paramilitaries before war broke out. As soon as she finished her course she was sent to Benjean in southern Poland to become a combat instructor. Three months later, Poland was partitioned and Germany invaded. Among the Jewish refugees fleeing Benjean was a group of ten underground members. They headed for Vilnus in Lithuania. It was
