The Importance of Genetics in Addiction
In addiction, the evidence suggests that genes account for about 60% of the probability of developing the illness. In obesity, it's around 60% genetic contribution. But in a subsistence, small scale hunter-gatherer society, you're not going to see many obese people because they're in this environment where food is scarce. And tobacco use too. I mean, this is extremely heritable, but tobacco use has diminished over time and we've basically enacted more penalties and more social statements stigma and so forth. It just means it may be more difficult for some people than others, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.
