The Significance of the Demon in the Second Law

Maxwell didn't like the fact that it was called the demon, and it was his friend William Thompson who called him that. And rather thought of a railway points man, which is all too actual image for us these days. He can get heat to flow from a colder body to a hotter body in an incredibly clever way. It's exactly as if you poured a glass of water into the ocean and then dipped that glass into the ocean with same molecules back. Exceedingly improbable. That was a way Maxwell showed how available work tends to dissipate.
