Since the Reformation, ever since the Protestant Reformation, something has happened which nobody really realized was going on. Western Protestant churches divided on ethnic lines because they wanted to have the Bible and the Liturgy in their own language. Nobody saw what was coming that by the end of the 16th century in say London, there would be a French-speaking church,. A Portuguese-speaking church, a Polish church, etc., as well as lots of English churches. Then we exported that to other parts of the world.
