chess was caught up in the global stand off between the communist us s r and the capitalist united states, otherwise known as the cold war. Back then, the game's international profile grew like never before. Chess's global popularity during this time owed to the fact that it became an arena of ideological and cultural competition between the two dominant powers. Because of the game's importance in show casing national brilliants, many players became celebrities and heroes both in their own nations and abroad. One of them was the soviet player, anatoli karpov, who was born in 19 51. He would go on to become a cold war star.
