The Importance of Keeping Deadlines

Don't slave yourself to the idea that everything you write has to be important or publishable. Just write it because it's fun because it gets you excited and can help you write the real thing you're working on. I've got a couple of pages of campy, film war, private investigator, first person stuff, which I wrote just because I wanted to play with that POV. It is totally unusable. But everything I put on the page was me having fun being over the top clever but not clever.
