LZ Granderson: When we talk about housing that is affordable to people at the low end of the economic spectrum in cities like this, I mean, I live in Manhattan. And historically, the cheap housing in Manhattan was SRO single resident occupancy type buildings where you have a small room of your own and shared bathroom. LZ: We have this kind of perverse policy where you can't build a new SRO, but it's also really hard to close and tear down one that exists. The units in those are subject to rent stabilization like any other apartment. He says Los Angeles allocates billions of dollars for the construction of the sort of housing and then it'll get it. L
