Food is a life-sustaining resource, so we definitely want to use it to our advantage. You will condition your verbal marker to communicate to the dog that the verbal marker means you've done something good and can earn some petting or great resources. Just get in the habit of acknowledging the good behavior, and don't forget to ignore the behavior that is not self-rewarding.
