i suspect that thermo regulation wasn't the reason they evolved. But potentially in stegasarus, i can see that they might have been coopted for that sort of purpose. I do wonder whether there is some sort of interspecific or intra specific kind of signalling display thing going on as well. Andt unfortunate, we just don't have the specimens to be able to really test those ideas right now.
