Rand Kivitz did a study on coffee. He found that if you had two pre-punched cards, people felt like they were making progress towards the goal and more motivated to get those punches. We don't use variable reinforcement even inside of organizations or in the rewards world we work in. It's there. But it's underutilized by marketers right now.
