Byronism became almost synonymous with romanticism in the early nineteenth century. Chateaubrian is half respectful and half ironical towards this movement. The french antics, from hugo onwards, are really, in a certain sense, disciples of byron. Although gece said that his later works and his life belied it, byron acted his beliefs in the most convincing fashion.
