Even in Catholicism we had currents which favored pleasure, pleasure on earth as an announcement of pleasure in the beyond. And in the enlightenment there were actually theoreticians of pleasure so people were started philosophize about the importance of happiness. Voltaire said paradise is where I am and Francis Bacon says that there is a goal of science it's improvement of man's estate. If you can improve man's estate if you can improveMan's condition then this earth is not only a value of tears but also a value of joy.
