The meal ready to eat, commonly known as the m r e, is a self contained individual field ration and lightweight packaging bought by the united states department of defense for use combat or other field conditions where organized food facilities are not available. Canned goods usually have a shelf life of a few years, whereas home jarred, sugared and jellied foods will last up to a year. Dehydrated and smoked meats and fish as well as confets, are good for months. Dried beans, the outir, can last decades in the right conditions.
