The Danvers State Hospital
The Danvers State Hospital opened in 1878. It was designed to house 500 patients, covering a wide spectrum of mental illness. By the 1920s, the population had grown to over 2000 patients. The staff struggled with keeping up and turned to more barbaric methods such as lobotomies.
