You need to know what's been done before. And there's nothing wrong with replicating something that's already been done. In terms of the ethics of research in general, we want to do research that's original. We don't want to waste people's time or taxpayers' money. So by reading you can understand what's beendone and what hasn't been done. What is the missing study? What is the question that needs to be asked? That puts you in a place where you know what needs to be done.
