William the Conqueror of England

In 1066, William the Conqueror begins building a castle in Pevancy. The Normans already have a reliable blueprint for construction. They begin by erecting a wooden keep on top of a mound of earth known as a mott. Later monarchs will add to it, building outer walls and enhancing the fortifications until William's castle becomes the central keep within the sprawling Tower of London complex.
