Randy Shriver: Beijing is painting this as sort of Asian NATO. I see no article five commitment in Ochus or the Quad. We now rely more on our allies to shape the environment than we did during the Bush administration. The relative balance of power has shifted in ways where we need Australia, Japan, Korea and India for geography,. For military firepower, for diplomatic influence. It's not going to be as easy as NATO because these are still bilateral relationships.
