Sugar was the first crop that made transatlantic shipping worth it. An eliteof rich, powerful sugar planters arose in barbadoes. Every square inch of land could be highly valuable in producing sugar. Barbadoes was a fairly flat, low lying island. Other islands were largely or entirely, mountainous.
