According to quantum mechanics, it's not just true that individual particles could be two places at once. So in order to explain the bands, you have to say the particle somehow fuels out both slits. It doesn't just go through one slit or the other. But the particle has to be considered that it goes through two at once. And that is the way you do quantum mechanics.
