A chicanisa is a mayan, or comes from the mayan language. It means at the mouth of the well of the itsa. According to britannica, it seems as though the city had started before isa and that they invaded it around the tenth century. The really big, impressive buildings that everyone knows were actually built by the isa once they took over.
