Why Is There a Relationship Between First Cause and Primary Primary Causation?

In the medieval tradition, they talk about God as the the first cause is it were. And in the tradition, following on from Thomas Aquinas, that's often called primary causation. These classical theists, even before Aquinas, people like Ibn Sina, seem to be committed to the claim that God can't be the same kind of cause that a billiard ball is. So if you're positive about God, you're probably not saying something true according to pseudo Dionysius.
