The dominant modalities and theories that were being used therapeutically in the 50s and 60s were still very Freudian and psychodynamic. The importance of an embodied relationship to the mind and to emotions didn't make its way into a larger mainstream understanding until much later on. A lot of what the psychedelic research is showing, I think, around why these things work for trauma healing are because they do give people access to that remembrance of I'm more than this limited ego self that experiences pain and suffering.
