The Relationship Between the Months and Agriculture
Ancients kept track of Heliocle Risings because it was important for agriculture. All societies needed to know when to reap and when to sow. We see a clear relationship between calendars and agriculture across many societies including the societies of ancient Mesopotamia. Many cultures didn't bother to keep track of time at all during winter when agriculture didn't take place. In fact, the vestiges of this practice remain with us today.
