You're Dead to Me

CHAPTER

The Importance of Aristotle

In 1277, the Bishop of Paris condemned 219 false propositions in philosophy. This may have accelerated the development of science because many ideas were associated with Aristotle. Medieval scholarship was all about building on previous people's ideas, not knocking them down. The theologians in 1277 weren't saying a vacuum had to exist. They were saying, God could make one if you felt like it. By trying to protect the power of God, they inadvertently promoted science. So we shouldn't belittle people who don't think like we do and appreciate different ways of looking at the world.
