In early computing, people were much more cognizant of the cost of hardware than they were about software. Once hardware became more commoditized, then there started to be companies involved in the production of software. At first, it was just people exchanging source code because they wanted to get more software. It wasn't because they had some grand philosophy behind wanting to keep the software open source.
