The brand of capitalism we have these days is actually not what adam smith anvisioned 200 and some odd years ago when he imagined the free markets. A smith believed that the customer, of course, comes first, a point that he thought was so self evident it didn't even need writing about. The idea of using mass lay offs to balance the books on an annualized basis did not exist in the united states prior to the 19 eighties. These are new ideas that have become so normal we think that's the way it's always been. They're very selfish, a held ahead of the good tt they can do for the people they're supposed to be serving.
